Trees and a wooden picnic shelter under a sunny sky in a park. Shadows stretch across green grass. Peaceful and serene setting.

Texas summers are no joke. With scorching temperatures and long dry spells, it’s easy for even well-established landscapes to struggle. But with a few smart strategies, you can help your outdoor space not only survive, but thrive, through the hottest months.

1. Water Early and Deeply

Watering early in the morning (before 10 AM) allows moisture to soak into the soil before the sun evaporates it. Deep watering less frequently is better than shallow daily watering, especially for trees, shrubs, and grass. This helps plants develop deeper roots and withstand heat better.

2. Use Mulch to Your Advantage

Mulch acts as a protective blanket over your soil, keeping it cool and locking in moisture. Organic mulch like cedar, hardwood, or bark can also improve soil quality over time. Apply 2–4 inches around plants but keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks.

3. Focus on Native and Drought-Tolerant Plants

Plants that are adapted to Texas heat—like lantana, salvia, and Mexican feather grass—require less water and tend to hold up better in summer. Incorporating these into your landscape helps reduce water usage while keeping things beautiful.

4. Adjust Your Mowing Practices

Raise the blade height on your lawnmower during summer. Taller grass provides shade for the soil, reduces evaporation, and promotes deeper root growth. Avoid mowing during the heat of the day or after heavy watering.

5. Don’t Over-Fertilize

Too much fertilizer can stress plants in high heat. If you must fertilize in summer, choose a slow-release formula and water it in thoroughly.

6. Check Your Irrigation System

Leaks or misaligned sprinkler heads can waste water and leave parts of your yard thirsty. Make sure your system is running efficiently and adjust zones based on plant needs and sun exposure.

With a few simple changes, you can protect your plants and keep your landscape looking great—even in the middle of a Texas summer. If you need help getting your irrigation system up to speed or refreshing tired plants, our team is here to help.
